delormea397  : (11 July 2010 - 06:53 PM) Hi there! I'm doing an application for an EMT program, and as part of the application I need to interview a practicing EMT or EMT-P. Any one out there able to help me? Shouldn't take long
Mobey  : (12 July 2010 - 12:50 PM) What province?
Mobey  : (12 July 2010 - 12:50 PM) feel free to PM me if Ab.
lynnbklein  : (12 July 2010 - 03:55 PM) Once a person has passed whatever level of paramedic exams in any province they shuld be acceptd in all provinces ( with proper verification)
Dooger  : (12 July 2010 - 08:27 PM) True in theory. Not so easy in actual practice.
Mobey  : (12 July 2010 - 11:04 PM) Wow lynnbklein, seems like you should read up on the AIT and how each province is adapting/rejecting it. That is a pretty general statement.
pattymedic  : (14 July 2010 - 03:39 PM) Looking for a EMD dispatch course. Any ideas? Found this one: https://courses.prio....aspx?abbrev=MB
pattymedic  : (14 July 2010 - 03:40 PM) but the fee's are in US$ ??
Mobey  : (14 July 2010 - 09:53 PM) AHASTI in Red Deer had a 2 or 3 day course that is pretty manageable. Might be worth a phonecall.
Scott L  : (18 July 2010 - 07:09 AM) Thanks Amphibiousmedic,
apollo  : (25 July 2010 - 12:05 PM) Anyone have any recommendations for an EMT program in AB? Preferably Calgary, but can live elsewhere if the education is that much better there. I heard SAIT is crap now? I'm thinking either Professional Medical Associates, Portage, or AHASTI...any insight would be appreciated!
Mobey  : (25 July 2010 - 12:12 PM) I have had AHASTI students, and was always impressed. PMA has a solid EMT course too. Portage is distance ed, so is Lakeland, so if that is what your looking for those are your options. I am a augustana/lakeland student so I am partial. Good luck (stay away from Flatline) oops outside voice!
Scott L  : (25 July 2010 - 02:08 PM) I have to agree with Mobey had alot of good dealings with AHASTI and Lakeland are very good. However I would steer well clear of PMA. Just my opinion but know too many factual horror stories about them.
apollo  : (25 July 2010 - 02:44 PM) Thanks guys! I'm definitely leaning towards AHASTI now, I took my EMR there and they were fantastic. Only thing is I don't see any upcoming EMT programs there (missed the deadline for the August one,) and I'm hoping to take it in October/Nov or Dec at the latest. Would I be able to get some more info Re: Horror stories with PMA from you Scott? Totally understand if you don't want to share because of confidentiality purposes, but if you can share them it'd help out a lot. They have a course starting at the perfect time for me, and they offer EMT-P, so definitely a bit bummed to hear they might not be the best route. If you'd prefer to e-mail me I can send you my email address. Thanks!
apollo  : (25 July 2010 - 02:46 PM) Woops, just want to clarify the EMT-P thing mentioned above is for the distant future of course, so that doesn't weight in the decision a whole lot. Just a nice bonus.
Mobey  : (25 July 2010 - 04:14 PM) apollo, EMT-P may seem like a distant future thing but it should in fact influence your EMT training. EMT training is only what... 9 mos in ab?
shawnc101  : (26 July 2010 - 07:37 AM) I am interested in doing an Observation shift with EMS Communications In Aug. I am currently a student with Seneca College here in Ontario and I am visiting Saint John's Newbrunswic the month of Augest anyone know how I can set this up?
shawnc101  : (26 July 2010 - 07:39 AM) Sorry I forgot to mention my field of study I am studying 911 and Emergency Services Communications
apollo  : (26 July 2010 - 10:47 PM) Very true Mobey, it's just weird getting in to that mindset. After doing a bit more research it seems like the overall reputation of PMA is pretty good, leaning towards applying with them right now.
Tyler911  : (31 August 2010 - 11:21 PM) Big fan of PMA... went there two years ago for my PCP and will be going there in the next year or two for my ACP.

Zamboni injury leaves B.C. victim steaming

ABBOTSFORD -- Rory Prouse might have lost two fingertips to a Zamboni last week, but it's not the ice-cleaning machine that has his family steaming.

Prouse was cleaning ice out of a Zamboni last Thursday at an rink in Abbotsford when his fingers got caught in the blade.

A fire department crew quickly arrived and bandaged Prouse. But, according to his mother-in-law, the ambulance they called for never showed.

After almost 45 minutes and no ambulance in sight, Prouse's boss had to rush him to the hospital.

"[The fire department] waited with my son to make sure he was OK until the ambulance came, but one never showed up," said Debora Tremblay.

"This shouldn't have happened."

Dr. Karen Wanger, medical director for the B.C. Ambulance Lower Mainland region, said at that time, there was a peak in demand for life-threatening calls.

She said Prouse's call was handled properly and it was understood that the situation was under control.

The family's displeasure, however, was compounded when Prouse arrived the Matsqui-Sumas-Abbotsford (MSA) General Hospital, where he had his hand frozen and was told to come back the next day for surgery.

"We went back early the next morning and it was like no one even knew who we were or what we were in for," said Prouse's wife Amanda.

She said they were told that the hospital's hand surgeon was away that week and they would try to find another surgeon to attend to Prouse.

"We waited for three hours, and by that time Rory was in an extreme amount of pain," said Amanda.

Tremblay said Rory was finally scheduled for surgery and was given instructions to go to the nearest hand surgeon at Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Coquitlam.

Dr. Dave Williams, medical director for MSA, said the hospital has only one plastic surgeon who takes on about 65 per cent of the calls. When their surgeon is away, they send patients to nearby hospitals.
